Who is Zachary Taylor? The people who can answer that question are likely elementary schoolers memorizing the presidents and the odd history buff who starts conversations with “Do you know who is sometimes considered the most effective Whig president?” When it comes down to it, Zachary Taylor is just some dude who sort of ran America for a couple of months, fifteen to be exact.

And what does Zachary Taylor have to do with July 9th? Well, that’s the day he died.

He didn’t quite burst into flames while trying to flambé bananas, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a shot. As a Louisiana native (and some other states too) Taylor would probably appreciate Bananas Foster, even if it wasn’t around until a few decades after his death. Besides, any president that doesn’t want liquored up fruit is no president of mine.

Bananas Foster

Ingredients
1 stick of butter
½ cup brown sugar
4 bananas peeled, halved, and cut lengthwise
¼ cup dark rum
Vanilla ice cream

Instructions
Melt butter in a large skillet. Using a wooden spoon add brown sugar and stir together.

Add the bananas and cook over medium-high heat until caramelized on both sides. Remove pan from heat and add rum.

Return to the stove to catch a flame or light with a long lighter.

Stand back when ignited and flambé the bananas. It’s fire. Be a badass, but be careful.

Let the flame die down and the alcohol cook out.

Serve bananas over vanilla ice cream (or with a pound cake if you’re feeling particularly wild).
