As you could have probably guessed, we here at Silver Spork love Thanksgiving. Food, pumpkin smells, a bit of spirited bickering with relatives, and the best excuse on the calendar for a long nap after lunch mean we can’t get enough of this day.

Thus, the cranberry ginger Thanksgiving cocktail. It combines the flavors of everyone’s favorite turkey day dishes with the wonderful escapist properties of alcohol—what more could you want? So if you’re forced to square off against a battalion of feuding family members ready to leap at each other’s throats about Obama’s latest political decision, then you won’t be going into the fight alone. As always, Silver Spork is by your side with a tasty weapon. Now, isn’t that something to be thankful for?

Thanksgiving Cranberry and Ginger Cocktail

Ingredients
4-inch piece ginger, peeled and roughly chopped
½ cup sugar
1 and ½ cups water
1 cup frozen cranberries
1 lime, juiced
2 cups vodka or gin
2 cups cranberry juice
Splash of club soda
Shaved ginger

Instructions
To make the ginger syrup, place the chopped ginger, sugar, and water in a saucepan and simmer until sugar dissolves and the ginger is infused in the syrup (usually takes about 20 minutes). Strain and allow to cool fully before use.

Next, crush the frozen cranberries in a large glass pitcher. Add the lime juice and their juiced wedges to the pitcher. Pour in the vodka, cranberry juice, and one cup of ginger syrup (or more if you love ginger as much as we do). Put ice in low-ball glasses and fill glasses about 2/3 full. Top off with club soda and garnish with a shaving of fresh ginger.

Note: Can be made without soda for a martini.
