In less than a week, my boyfriend and I are picking up and moving from San Antonio to Jersey City, New Jersey. It’s been difficult saying goodbye to the people and places that we’ve come to know, especially when there’s no guarantee that we’ll see them again. If we are lucky enough to see them, instead of waiting days, it could be weeks, months, or even years.
With what little time we have left in the heart of Texas, we’re retracing our steps and revisiting our favorite foodie places. The first place that came to mind was a French bakery that we stumbled upon while at the Pearl Brewery farmer’s market one Sunday morning last year.
When you walk into Bakery Lorraine, you are immediately greeted with the smells of fresh-baked pastries and strong coffee. The employees delivering the breakfast sandwiches and quiches are practically walking advertisements for the brunch menu. Everything that goes by looks picture perfect, not to mention mouthwatering. So, how do you decide what to get?
My personal favorite menu item is the English muffin breakfast sandwich with spinach, a poached egg, fontina, and lemon aïoli. I wasn’t even sure what fontina or aïoli were when I first ordered. (Later, I found out that fontina is an absolutely delicious cheese, and aïoli is a sauce made of olive oil, garlic, and egg yolk.) After being convinced by the cashier that I wouldn’t be disappointed with my choice, I went for it. The combination of flavors and textures took me by surprise; it was absolutely fantastic. Who knew how well lemon would compliment spinach or eggs? Needless to say, it wasn’t on my plate for very long.
Since then, we’ve tried hazelnut, chocolate, and butter croissants; macarons; sweet potato muffins; the infamous Bakery Lorraine quiche; each breakfast sandwich on the menu; and the baked oatmeal and yogurt parfait. I can’t emphasize enough how amazing their pastries are. I remember telling one of the employees that I didn’t know what a macaron was and she laughed, and then brought over two for me. She said, “You haven’t lived until you’ve had a macaron.” She was so right.
Though it might be awhile before I make it back to San Antonio and to Bakery Lorraine, I will live vicariously through those I know that frequent it. I highly recommend this bakery if you’re in the area! The restaurant is cozy and the wait staff is so friendly – we are always recognized and greeted like family. Starting small in the beginning, Bakery Lorraine has become a staple in the community, and I am going to miss it immensely.
