Haunted Trail Bites
It’s hard to imagine a time where one would get tired of candy, apple pie, butterbeer, caramel apples, or fizzy punches. Lord knows we at Silver Spork plan on getting our fill of these things this week (some may already have sugar-sober rides planned for Friday night). One thing that is for sure is that our mouths are going to need a break from all of the high-fructose corn syrup we’ll ingest. So, why not sneak a few faux-healthy snacks into Halloween to make those oh-so-sweet goodies taste even better?
We bring you the Haunted Trail Bites.
Haunted Trail Bites
1 cup chopped pitted dates
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped dried apples
5 graham cracker rectangles, broken
3 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon apple pie spice
1/2 cup glazed pecans, finely chopped
First of all, you will need a food processor. If you don’t already have one, it’s a complete miracle. I mean, it chops things up in 10 seconds that would take the average cook 20 minutes to do! That might just be my slow-ass time, but I’ve embraced my lack of chopping skills.
Using your food processor, process the dates, raisins, and apples. Continue processing the shit out of these guys until you get a thick paste.
I loathe dates beyond all reason, so I decided to double the raisins and apples. It turned out really well!
Next, add your five small rectangles of graham crackers. Process, again, until nice and pastey.
At this point, you can add your apple pie spice and your first tablespoon of honey.
If you don’t have any apple pie spice, a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom will do the trick.
Roll your paste into 1-inch rounds. I made about 15, but mine were a bit bigger (I can’t math).
Place your glazed pecans in a shallow bowl or plate so you can easily roll your rounds in them. Before you do, though, dip the balls into your remaining 2 tablespoons of honey (make sure that the excess honey drips off before you roll them in the pecans.
The raisin/apple combo makes this treat naturally sweet. So, if you’d like to give your cavities a break, I suggest using uncandied, plain pecans. If you can’t stand to part from sugar for even one Halloween treat, use candied pecans! I candied a combination of pecans and almonds and it was SUPER SWEET.
Once you roll each ball in honey, and then in the pecans, you can put them in an air-tight container. They’re ready to be eaten!
I know, I’m literally the worst person ever to suggest that you attempt to eat healthy on this candy-coated holiday. Let me put it this way: If you aren’t into deliciously healthy snacks, then use these as a diversion to steal candy from children. I’m sure if you chuck these at anyone, they’ll give you their candy and their lunch money. You’re welcome.
