Butterbeer Shakes and “Authentic” Butterbeer Recipes

Calling myself a Harry Potter enthusiast would be an understatement.

And, for some reason, ABC Family always runs a Harry Potter marathon at Christmas. So whenever Christmas arrives, I find myself re-watching Harry Potter.

But who can watch Harry Potter without drinking Butterbeer?

I found a Pinterest recipe that looked amazing in my replica Butterbeer mug from the London Studio Tour. It was delicious, but more like a Butterbeer shake. My brother is a purist and demanded the Butterbeer look like the Butterbeer in the movies.

So three batches of Butterbeer later, I found the perfect “authentic” recipe! Now if my letter to Hogwarts would just arrive…

Note: The imitation butter extract is difficult to fine. But in the spices, I found some butter “sprinkles.” I mixed those in and they worked just find. But since it’s a powder, make sure you don’t put too much in or it won’t dissolve.

Butterbeer shake

Butterbeer Shake

2 cups vanilla ice cream
2 cups cream soda ice cubes (takes about 4 hours to freeze)
2 teaspoons imitation butter extract (or a pinch of butter sprinkles)
1 teaspoon rum extract
4 tablespoons butterscotch topping
1 cup cream soda
A pinch of salt
Whipped cream

Place ice cream and cream soda ice cubes in a blender. Add in all ingredients except for whipped cream. Blend until a consistent, smooth mixture.

Pour into a mug (or your replica Harry Potter mug). Add whipped cream and drizzle with additional butterscotch topping.
