Avatar the Last Airbender Recipes: Earth Kingdom Meat n’ Taters

Suggested song to play while cooking: Scraping Up The Pieces, by Twin Forks

The Earth Kingdom, strong and proud. Not a nation, not a tribe, but a kingdom. It screams regality and authority. For this recipe I knew I needed something hearty. What could truly speak to the earth? Immediately I thought of potatoes.

Potato in French is pomme de terre, literally translating to “apple from the earth.” Still, I couldn’t just make potatoes, for Earth is plentiful and giving. Therefore, this recipe is a sort of three birds with one stone—three quick, easy, short recipes, combined like puzzle pieces to form one whole, delicious meal. Each recipe has few and simple ingredients, and it’s made to last. Also, each are all wicked yummy.

Recipe 1: Pulled beef, recipe by my mum

Cook time: 8 hours

1 Package of stew beef
Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbecue Sauce

Equipment: Crock-pot

Pour in some Sweet Baby Ray’s on the bottom of the crock-pot. Toss in the beef—fat trimmed away—and pour more Ray’s on top. Thoroughly douse the meat.

Turn the crock-pot on low, and let it sit for approximately 8 hours (best to start this baby early in the morning if you plan to eat it that night).

Serve piping hot, by itself, on a bun, in a sandwich, or however you feel. It’s quite versatile!

Recipe 2: Dem Wedges, recipe by Tyler Capps.

Recipe found here: http://www.cookingcomically.com/?page_id=544

Cook time: 45-55 minutes

Approximately 6 red potatoes
Approximately 1 tablespoon olive oil
1-2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
½ teaspoon of salt
¼ teaspoon basil (tho I use more than this)
Cayenne pepper
Garlic powder
Onion powder

Instructions (I will write them down here, but really you should read it on Tyler’s site, it’s pretty entertaining)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Rinse off your potatoes and slice them. Put into a bowl and drizzle on some olive oil. Toss them to spread oil evenly.

Mix spices and Parmesan cheese together. Add seasoning and toss again.

Line cookie sheet with tin foil (you may also want to spray it with cooking spray; these guys can stick). Spread wedges out evenly and bake for 45-55 minutes. Fin.

Recipe 3: Carrots and Onions in Rosemary, recipe by moi

Few carrots, chopped into bite size pieces
1-2 onions, chopped
½ tablespoon butter
½ teaspoon garlic
2-3 tablespoons lemon juice

Peel and chop up your carrots into bite size bits and put into a saucepan. Chop up onion and throw in with the carrots along with the butter. Sauté for a few minutes, allowing the butter to melt.

Add in the lemon juice and garlic, and some rosemary to taste—a note here, rosemary is a pretty strong spice so take it slow.

Sauté until onions and carrots are tender—also to taste depending on how crunchy or soft you’d like the veggies to be.

Combine all recipes together into one delicious, hearty, Earth Kingdom meal!
