Justifying Julep

The Kentucky Derby was earlier this month (May 5), and we here at Silver Spork were justifiable excited about the winner of this year. Now, while the Derby was awhile ago, we figure it’s never not a good time to raise a celebratory cocktail.¬†Especially when it’s the Derby’s cocktail of choice official holiday.

So sit back, and get ready to sip for National Mint Julep Day.

Mint Julep

  • 1/4 oz (raw) Sugar Syrup
  • 8 Mint Leaves
  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • Bitters (optional)
  • 1 Mint Spring (optional)
  • Julep cup or rocks glass*

Muddle mint and syrup together in the glass, then pour in Bourbon. Fill the glass with  crushed) ice and stir, getting the drink plenty chilled and cold.

If you want to bring your drink to the next Instagrammable level, add some more crushed ice to the top and add a drop or two of bitters. Finish it off with the mint spring.

Lastly, drink up and think of big hats, horses, and National Mint Julep Day.

*or a sturdy glass, if like our Head Dish, you only one piece of nice bar cocktail accoutrements
